Orbis Pictus Award (nonfiction for children) - NCTE

The Orbis Pictus Award for Extraordinary Nonfiction for Children recognizes books that show excellence in "nonfiction writing for children." This award is given annually by the National Council of English Teachers for an American book published the year before. Up to five titles can be set as Honor Books. The award is named after the book is considered the first picture book for children, Orbis Pictus ( World in Pictures ), by John Amos Comenius, published in 1657 The award has been recognized one book every year without exception since it was inaugurated in 1990.

Criteria

  • This book should be "nonfiction literature that has the primary purpose of sharing information". Biography is accepted, but not "textbooks, historical fiction, folklore, or poetry".
  • The book must have been published during the previous calendar year in the United States.
  • The book must meet literary, organizational, design, and literary literary criteria.
  • In addition, the book "should be useful in the K-8 classroom teaching classroom, should encourage thinking and more reading, modeling expository writing and research skills, sharing interesting and timely material, and appealing to all ages."
