The Prime Movers is a rock band from The Sierra Madre, CA, known for its post-punk music and lyrical lyrics that inspire the taste of New West.
With titles such as "On The Trail," "Last Cafe" and "Dark Western Night," The Prime Movers found themselves in the midst of a psychedelic awakening in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s along with other bands like Dream Syndicate, The Long Ryders, Rain Parade, Thin White Rope and Red Green. Island Records signed The Prime Movers and released five EP (Prime Movers) songs and two singles, "On The Trail" and "Dark Western Night." A song from EP, "Strong As I Am" was chosen by filmmaker Michael Mann to become the flagship song in his movie, Manhunter. The song is included in the soundtrack of Manhunter and released as A-side from the single on MCA Records.
The band broke out in 1988 and three main members, Severs Ramsey, Gary Putman and Curt Lichter turned into Dread Zeppelin.

Island
The Prime Movers signed to the Island and soon began work on what became their epic named 5-song EP. The band added vocalist Gregory Markel just before the recording session began. Markel contributed amazing sounds and ideas to a new song called "Strong As I Am" which would later play a big part in The Prime Mover saga. The tape was produced by the British, Chris Tsangarides, famous for his work with many heavy metal acts including Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. The EP was recorded at MCA Whitney Studios in Glendale, CA, and the session was engineered by MCA staff, Doug Schwartz.
EP, with songs, "On The Trail," Strong As I Am, "instrumental," Kahlua House, "" She Got Pages "and" The Outsider "were released in the United States and Britain in 1985 to comment. On The Trail "was picked up by BBC Radio One who played it as if it were the number one single.Quest to see the band in England in such a way that a rushed press tour is set to be immediately followed by a UK tour as acting support for the Great Country.
Unfortunately, before the tour began, Markel, citing artistic differences, dropped out, left the band as a trio again. Undaunted, The Prime Movers returned to the studio with Tsangarides and recorded the single, "Dark Western Night" b/w "Lost In Your World." This time, the band was recorded at Robin Millar's studio studio, The Power Plant, in London. With Big Country finishing work on their album, The Seer in the studio next door, The Prime Movers asks a new friend, Stuart Adamson, to put the guitar part in "Dark Western Night." He lends his typical E-Bow (bagpipe) guitar sound to a single.
Country Greater UK Tour
In March 1986, The Prime Movers embarked on a 15-day UK Tour as a special guest of the Big Country. The Seer Tour was supported by the number one single charting power, "Look Away," and all the performances were sold out including two nights packed in the fabled London Hammersmith Odeon. The tour was a huge success and The Prime Mover's "Dark West Night" was repacked by the Island as a twelve-inch, yellow vinyl, two sets with a record of two live recordings of the tour.
Manhunter
Regular events in live performances of The Prime Movers is film director Michael Mann. Mann chose the song, "Strong As I Am" for an important place in his cult thriller, Manhunter. "Strong As I Am" included in the album soundtrack Manhunter and later released by MCA as a single. Mann financed the making of the video "Strong As I Am".
Dread Zeppelin
Upon their return to the US, Prime Movers learned that the Managing Director and most of the A & P staff on the Island had been dismissed. Demos continued to be recorded for the proposed Prime Mover album, but it soon became clear that the band no longer had a champion inside the company. The island will not let Prime Movers issue new material, nor will it release them from their record deal. Although there are offers from other majors, especially interested Rhino Records, The Prime Movers finds themselves out of business without label support.
Severs Ramsey and long life engineer, Lee Manning, collected many of the songwriting demos into an album that was distributed to a campus radio called, "Spooked." The band also secured the opening slot on Thomas Dolby's "Alien Ate My Buick" tour of 1988 USA. Despite the success of the tour and renewed interest in the band because of the new material on "Spooked," the band realized they had nowhere to go.
That's when Ramsey hatched a brilliant idea to record new music under a pseudonym. He, Putman and Lichter, respectively as Jah Paul Jo, Put-Mon, and Cheese, recruited some old friends and entered their own self-induced Witness Protection Program: Dread Zeppelin was born.
The Prime Movers officially disbanded in 1988 with three original members devoting full time to the Zeppelin Dread project.
Reunion
In 2006, Ramsey and Putman, along with new drummer, Gary Falasco, reunited for a series of sporadic performances as well as a re-CD of their 1984 album, "The Museum." Bonus tracks on CD releases include The Prime Movers' first single, "Chances" plus live versions of "On The Trail" and "In Touch With You" from The Big Country tour, as well as a live version of "That Freedom" Station Feeling/Way "recorded at The Roxy in Hollywood, California in 1988.
