Pepper Spray vs. Mace - Important Differences - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

Mace is a generic trademark of Chemical Mace , the brand name of the initial aerosol self-defense spray type invented by Allan Lee Litman in 1965. The first commercial product of the type, design litman packed phenacyl chloride (CN) tear gas dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent into a small aerosol spray, can be used in almost any environment and strong enough (when sprayed on the face) to act as a credible and inadequate deterrent. Its popularity causes the brand name to be shortened to just "Mace" to all defense sprays (regardless of composition). It does not relate to spices, mace.

Histori

The original formulations consist of 1% CN in 2-butanol solvents, propylene glycol, cyclohexene, and dipropylene glycol methyl ether.

Chemical Mace was originally created in 1965 by Allan Lee Litman, founder and co-owner of Pittsburgh-based General Equipment Equipment (GOEC), after his wife, Doris, was threatened on the road. In 1987, Chemical Mace was sold to Smith & amp; Wesson and manufactured by their Erie Lake Chemical division. Smith & amp; Wesson then transferred ownership to Jon E. Goodrich along with the rest of the chemical division in what is now Mace Security International. Although the design has been expanded, the original Chemical Mace formula using only CN has been discontinued. Due to the potentially toxic nature of the CN and the quality of leaf oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper that is generally superior in most situations, the initial CN has largely been replaced by the OC formula in police use, although Mace Security International still retains the popular "Triple Action" formula combining CN, OC and ultraviolet light dye.
