Careers

2009-12: Beginning and Leap Year

Hoodie Allen was originally a duo of Steve Markowitz and Obey City (Samuel Obey, childhood friend) on vocals and production, respectively. The name came about because the nickname Steven grew up is "Hoodie," and he wanted a name that "would stick in people's minds and be a bit funny and represent who I am" so the game from renowned filmmaker Woody Allen is settling in. The first two releases from Steve and Obey are Bagels & amp; Beats EP and Makes Waves mixtape. They got a Hoodie nomination for MTVU's Best Music at the Campus Award in 2009. The single "UPENN Girls" also received important attention. However, in 2010 Obey City stopped producing in Hoodie for unknown reasons, and Steve continued to make music with RJ Ferguson (aka RJF), giving himself the name Hoodie Allen. In June 2010, he released "You Are Not a Robot," which sampled "I Am Not a Robot" by Marina and Diamonds and who reached No. 1 on Hype Machine, the aggregator who collected the most music on blogs about the world. After seeing the response, he spends the summer working, and completes his Pep Rally mixtape in September. The album was mostly produced by RJF, and sampled songs from Death Cab for Cutie, Flight Facility, Marina and Diamond, Ellie Goulding, and Two Door Cinema Club. He chose the name "Pep Rally" because he said that "seized energy from the record" and something "new and exciting." She self-funded a video for the main single "You Are Not A Robot," which helped mixtape download more than 200,000 times.

In July 2011, Hoodie released their third mixtape, Leap Year . This reached 250,000 SoundCloud playing in its first week of release. To support the album, Hoodie leads a 15-city tour of North America, including stops in San Francisco, New York City and Montreal, with Fortune Family supporters opening in several places. 2012: All Americans

On March 4, 2012, Hoodie announced via Twitter that he would be releasing his first EP, entitled All American . He decided on this title because he praised his success for freedom in the United States, because he felt the songs were showcasing his best music to date, and because of a hometown restaurant of the same title. Hoodie spent five months developing the album, building the track from scratch with his producer, RJF, rather than using sample beats. Regarding the writing process, Hoodie states that, "I would describe it as liberation... It was like, 'Okay, I heard this idea in my head, I heard these original ideas, [and] I put them and connected them together. "On March 29, 2012, Hoodie released the first single from All American entitled" No Interruption, "as well as his music video.
