A giant dog type does not have a high classification or universal weight, although some groups define "giant breeds" as those who weigh more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds). The giant race grows rapidly, but it takes longer to mature to their full adult size than smaller dogs.

Advantages and disadvantages
Many giant breeds are adult dogs, soft and relaxed as adults and require less exercise than smaller dogs, so they can make better pets for small living arrangements, such as apartments. Because they are larger animals, they tend to be intimidated by others and thus much more adaptable to meeting friends, family members, and owner's children. They are usually very quiet and are incredible family dogs. If they feel a threat to their owners, they will become very protective. They are, in general, stronger than other breeds and many gigantic breeds are notorious for their work skills.
Large breeds often have health-related disadvantages when compared to smaller dogs and caring for them is usually more expensive than smaller dogs. They eat more than smaller offspring and sometimes require special diets to overcome weight and joint management.
In addition to spending more on food, the overall cost may be more than most breeds. Bigger beds, collars and toys cost more, such as caring for and putting a very large dog to sleep. There are also more expensive vet bills. For example, anesthesia and drugs are filled by volume/mass, determined by the weight of the dog. Joint problems, such as hip dysplasia and arthritis, are common. Large breeds are also quite susceptible to osteosarcoma and are prone to other paralyzing bone and cartilage diseases. This is the result of a much higher growth factor - adult weight than birth weight - and a longer period of growth. Their life span is generally shorter than a small dog, often living only 6 to 10 years.
