Final Fantasy XV is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix; the game is the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series of companies. It was released in 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and then ported for Microsoft Windows in 2018. The game features an open world environment and action-based battle system, combining fast switching weapons, elemental magic, and other features such as travel and camping. The basic campaigns are then expanded with downloadable content (DLC), adding further gameplay options such as playable and multiplayer characters.

Final Fantasy XV takes place in Eos's fictional world; Regardless of the kingdom of Lucis, the whole world is dominated by the Niflheim empire, which seeks control of the magical Crystal that is protected by the royal family of Lucis. On the eve of the peace negotiations, Niflheim attacked the capital of Lucis and stole Crystal. Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the throne of Lucian, went on a quest to save Crystal and defeat Niflheim. He then studied the full role as "True King", destined to use Crystal's power to save Eos from plunging into eternal darkness. The game shares a thematic connection with Fabra Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy , a game subseries associated with common myths that include Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0

Game development began in 2006 as a Playstation 3 spin-off titled Final Fantasy Versus XIII . Tetsuya Nomura serves as the original director and character designer. After a six-year development period, it was changed to the title of the next major line in the series in 2012; Nomura was replaced as a director by Hajime Tabata, and the game shifted to the eighth generation platform. To complete the game, Square Enix created a multimedia project called "Final Fantasy XV Universe", which includes anime series, feature films and DLC episodes. The game is positively received by critics, with praise given to the game and its visuals, while the acceptance of the story and its presentation varies. In January 2018, the game has sold over seven million copies worldwide.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy XV is an open world role-playing game game where players control the main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum during his journey across the Eos world. While accompanied by his three friends Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, Noctis is the only character directly controlled by the player: he can navigate through simple movements, jump over small obstacles, run for a limited time, and perform context-based actions such as taking the lid on the back object. The Kingdom of Lucis is a large connected landway that can be explored on foot, using the "Regalia" party car, or chocobos, a repetitive galliform in the Final Fantasy series. Both the selected Regalia and Chocobos can be customized by players, and Chocobos can join in battle if their connection to the characters is strong enough. While Chocobos is manually controlled, Regalia can be controlled manually or automatically. Parties can also make quick trips to unlocked areas on the world map. Regalia must refuel regularly at gas station. In the cities that can be visited, there are inns and hotels where they can stay, shops where goods and equipment can be purchased with in-game currency gleases, and local tipsters, non playable characters (NPCs) that provide information about the quest, from the mission of the main story to the side quest. Side quests are also available from individual NPCs found in cities. During some story sequences, the dialog option appears for Noctis, with the option selected changing the response of the NPC. The game also contains two difficulty modes, with players able to switch between the two.

Battle system

This game uses a real-time action-based battle system, called Active Cross Battle system. Instead of using menu interfaces, players select commands that are mapped directly to the buttons on the controller, such as "Attack", "Defend", and "Item". Battles occur in the current environment rather than transition to separate arenas, and can range from open plains to enclosed building interiors. When approaching the enemy, the threat meter appears at the top of the screen, the deeper the intensity the party approaches to the enemy. As the party gets closer and strikes or is detected, the battle begins. Escape from the enemy and exit the combat zone in a normal battle to end the battle. During the battle, each character has health points (HP), and Noctis also has magic points (MP). HP runs out whenever a character is attacked, while MP Noctis recovers from time to time when not in combat or when not using related capabilities such as warping or special weapon skills. If the current HP characters reach zero, they enter Danger Mode, where HP's maximum limit will be reduced; characters are defeated when all their maximum HP is lost. Some enemies, such as Daemons, are able to lower the HP cap with their attacks. If Noctis is defeated, there is a short period in which revival items should be used. If the player fails to do so, the game ends.

Noctis can perform four actions in battle: standard attacks; defend, block and attack; warping, which brings Noctis to targeted areas like other enemies or out-of-the-way warp points, and uses items. There is an option "Wait Mode" available, where if all player input stops, pause the battle, and player can choose new enemy to attack or action to do within the time limit. The options available for Noctis and Ignis in Wait Mode are Libra, a capability that displays the strengths, weaknesses and weaknesses of the enemy. Noctis can find and equip various weapons, including single and double swords, polearm, ax, shield, firearm, dagger and Royal Arms. The weapon manifests from thin air when Noctis fights, and can be manually shifted by the player. The type of weapon that is equipped determines the attack speed and the amount of damage to the normal attack. In addition to normal attacks, there are attacks that handle more damage based on Noctis positions such as "Side Strike" or "Blindside", in addition to Warp Strike attacks. Attacks from enemies can be deflected, and depending on the quality of the Noctis parry can counterattack. If using a shield type weapon, a successful block would surprise the enemy, making them vulnerable to attack. Noctis can launch a special attack with Royal Arms dubbed "Armiger", when the meter fills during battle: while stronger than standard weapons, Royal Arms consumes HP with every use. Noctis can also use two classes of firearms - Weapons, which range from pistols such as pistols to rifles; and Machine, a powerful weapon that has various effects depending on the type used, from generating strong shock waves to deal with high melee damage.

Noctis friends, controlled by game artificial intelligence (AI), can perform contextual commands. When Noctis manages to fend off enemy attacks, or performs Side Strike or Blindside, cooperative attacks between him and his friends called Link-strike can be triggered. During the battle, a meter called Tech Bar is filled. When full, Noctis can order his friends to perform a special movement called Technique: Gladiolus performs a sweeping attack with his sword, Ignis uses his dagger to mark the enemy so Noctis can perform a curved attack, and Prompto uses his weapon to fire a powerful shot that penetrates a formidable opponent. After each, Noctis can initiate a follow-up attack. Noctis can also trigger the Armiger Chain, where he splits his Royal Arms among his comrades before launching a single attack.

Magic is separated into two types: Elemancy and Arcana. Elemansi separated into three types: Fire, Ice, and Lightning. The elemental energy is taken from dots across the world map, absorbed into special bottles and used to make magical bombs that can be used on enemies. Elemancy can also be combined with certain items to add new effects, such as healing party members while damaging the enemy. Both Noctis and his friends can use Elemancy. Arcana, accessed when Noctis has acquired and furnished a related item of story called the Lucii Ring, has access to a stronger magical ability such as "Death", which drains the enemy's health. After a certain point in the game, Noctis can summon a monster called Astrals, who helps the party by launching a devastating attack. The calls shown are regular series including Titan, Ramuh, Leviathan and Shiva. Their type of attack, and even whether they are helpful at all, depends on the environment: for example, Leviathan can only be called out in the open when there is a body of water nearby. At certain points in the story, Noctis joins the guest character who has Link-Strikes and Techniques.

Character development

After each battle, the characters gain experience points (EXP), but they do not automatically level up when a certain amount of EXP has been collected. Instead, the party must go to a safe zone called "Havens", ie a place of rest like lodging or campsites. When the party rests at night, each character gets a level depending on the amount of EXP earned. If you lose the battle, all EXP goes up to that point because the last level goes up permanently. Activities in the outside world earn Party Ability points (APs). AP is spent on the Ascension Grid, a game leveling system, which is divided into a skill tree called "Astralspheres". Each Astralsphere is sorted by type, associated with magic, combat or passive abilities. The AP expenditure opens a node inside the Astralsphere, which in turn provides access to a further node requiring higher number of APs to unlock.

Noctis friends each have their own skills that level up based on usage, and affect the equipment. Noctis's fishing ability increases the more time he lures and the better stuff he uses, which in turn spreads to his equipment. Gladiolus Survival Skills increase by the distance traveled by the parties in one day, improving the quality of their equipment and goods. Cooking Ignis can be improved based on ingredients either bought at the store or found in the wild, and the food provides a stat boost for the party. Prompto takes photos during party trips, and the quality of his own skills increases with time. The post-release update allows control of all four characters during a battle after unlocking a custom node in Grid Ascension; each character uses the type of weapon and the specific ability attached to it.

Multiplayer

A multiplayer mode called Comrades was released as an expansion, with gameplay and battle lifted from the main game and customized for multiplayer; rather than predefined characters, players take on the role of a customizable avatar that takes part in some of the stories skipped by the main narrative. The game starts with players who choose gender, hairstyles, clothing, and other aspects. Using the in-game city of Lestallum as their base, players are assigned missions with three other characters - either other players or AI-controlled. During the mission, players fight against monsters either on sorting or to maintain transportation; at the end of each mission, players are given Gil, materials used to compile and improve weapons, and "Meteorshards" that can strengthen settlements around Lestallum and open new missions. Some areas open Royal Tombs that give players Royal Sigil; These sigils improve specific statistics and provide new themed capabilities such as healing or enhancing combat movements. Players have access to various types of weapons from normal swords to maces and shurikens, which are enhanced using materials to enhance passive capabilities such as their damage capacity.

Synopsis

Settings

Final Fantasy XV takes place in the Earth-like Eos world, which is divided into four states: Lucis, Accordo, Tenebrae and Niflheim. Lucis, who occupies the entire land, possessed a magical artefact known as the Crystals, which was given to the Caelum dynasty which ruled by the gods of the world in ancient times and accessed through the hereditary Ring of Lucii. The Accordo, located in the southern part of Eos, is an island nation formed through a free trade city union. The western continent is home to the technologically advanced empire of Niflheim and the Tenebrae nation, ruled by Oracle - a pastor who can communicate with the gods. Oracle's primary task is to cure Starscourge, an outbreak that absorbs all natural light and allows the nocturnal monster known as the Daemon to explore the world.

The center of Eos's knowledge is the Astrals, six divine beings that serve as guards of the natural world and are based on a monster called from the series Final Fantasy ; and the True King, the foremost legendary figure appeared when Starscourge threatened to pour Eos into eternal night. An important part of the backstory Eos is the Great War of Old, the conflict that was born when Solheim's ancient human civilization revived the Astrals and their Ifrit protectors; Ifrit's attempt to destroy humanity defies Astrals's duty to protect Eos, forcing them to kill Ifrit. The implied Great War of Old has led Starscourge spread across the planet, accelerating the fall of Solheim.

Over the centuries, Lucis has been at war with the militaristic Niflheim, which seeks to mimic the triumph of Solheim. To that end Niflheim had subjugated most of Eos, including the Accordo and Tenebrae; Tenebrae maintains limited political autonomy due to Oracle's influence. Only the capital of Insomnia belongs to Lucis who remains invincible because of the use of Crystal power, which slowly depletes the king of his life force. At the beginning of the ceasefire game was declared between the two countries because of the failing king's health; as part of a peace treaty, Niflheim will take control of all Lucian territories outside Insomnia, and marriage is set between the apparent heirs of the royal family of Lucis and Tenebrae.

Character

The two main characters are Noctis Lucis Caelum, the crown prince of Lucis and the only playable character who lost his father in the Niflheim invasion; and his fiancée e Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, the current Oracle and former daughter of Tenebrae. Noctis was accompanied in his journey by three others: Gladiolus Amicitia, the family descendant who was sworn to protect the Noctis family; Ignis Scientia, an outstanding military tactician and advisor to Noctis; and Prompto Argentum, a Noctis friend of the lower social class. Guest characters include Cor Leonis, a legendary fighter Lucis who acts as an early guide to the Noctis party; and Iris Amicitia, Gladiolus's sister. The other key figures are Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, king Lucis and Noctis father; Officer Gentiana, Lunafreya; and Cid Sophiar and his grandson Cindy Aurum, the mechanic who keeps the party car. The Niflheim Empire was ruled by Emperor Iedolas Aldercapt. Aldercapt's allies include Ardyn Izunia, imperial chancellor and the main antagonist of the game; Ravus Nox Fleuret, Lunafreya's brother and high commander of the Niflheim army; Verstael Besithia, head of imperial researcher; and Aranea Highwind, a mercenary dragon serving Niflheim.

Plot

Noctis and his three friends started their journey to Altissia, the capital of Accordo, where Noctis's wedding to Lunafreya will take place. Locating the local boat service stopped, they received news of Niflheim's attack on the city of Insomnia and Crystal theft; Lucian King Regis has been murdered, and both Noctis and Lunafreya are declared dead. Met with Cor, Noctis was assigned to take the Royal Arms - magical weapon of the king of Lucian's past - to save Crystal and reclaim his throne. While living in the town of Lestallum with Iris, Noctis was contacted by Astral Titan; driven by Ardyn, Noctis survived the Titan trials and gained his strength, learning that Lunafreya traveled ahead of Noctis to awaken Astrals from their sleep. The group continues to travel across Lucis, pick up the Royal Arms and meet the Ramadan Astral with help from Gentiana. He was also confronted by a hostile Ravus, a spar with Aranea mercenaries, and received further assistance from Ardyn. The group finally recovered the section to repair the old Regis cruise ship, using it for a trip to Altissia.

The party arrives at Altissia, where Lunafreya has taken refuge. Lunafreya evokes Astral Leviathan so Noctis can gain his strength, only for Leviathan to go berserk when Niflheim attacks. Ardyn appeared and wounded Lunafreya, interrupting the ritual; However, he managed to awaken Noctis's powers, allowing him to defeat the Leviathan. While unconscious, he is visited in a dream by the spirit of Lunafreya, who gives him the Ring of Lucis. Noctis wakes up to find Altissia in chaos, and that Ignis is blinded during battle. The party continues towards the Niflheim capital of Gralea by train, while Ignis' blindness and Noctis sadness from Lunafreya cause friction with Gladiolus until Ignis forces reconciliation. It was also revealed that the night grew longer, causing more Daemons to appear. Ardyn then tricked Noctis to throw the Prompto off the train, and held Prompto and the Crystal prisoner at the Gralea military fortress, Zegnautus Keep, revealing Crystal's power to destroy Daemon. Noctis proceeds to Tenebrae, where Aranea helps the refugees from across Eos. While at Tenebrae, Noctis learns that Lunafreya is dying of building Astrals, and that Ravus now supports him. On a recent trip to Gralea, the train was ambushed by Daemon; After defeating them, Noctis received the blessing of Shiva Astral from Gentiana, who revealed himself as Shiva's human form.

Arriving to find Gralea overrun by Daemons, Noctis is separated from his friends and forced to use the Lucii Ring to survive from Zegnautus Keep. After reuniting with and rescuing the Prompto, the party continues through Zegnautus Keep, defeating Ravus and Emperor Aldercapt, who have turned into Daemons. Forced to leave his friends behind, Noctis finally reaches Crystal, only to be drawn into it. Ardyn appeared and revealed himself as Ardyn Lucis Caelum, a former healer whose infection by Starscourge caused Astrals and Crystal to reject it; granted perpetually by Starscourge, Ardyn has since sought revenge on the royal lineage and Crystal, speeding the onslaught of Starscourge while waiting for the True King to appear so that he can destroy both of them. In Crystal, Noctis meets with Astral Bahamut; he learns that he is the true King of Prophecy, who will cleanse Starscourge and return the light to Eos at the expense of his life. Noctis returns to Eos after ten years, finding the world shrouded in darkness. Reunited with his friends, Noctis headed for Insomnia, fighting Ifrit - revived and marred by Starscourge - before facing Ardyn. After killing Ardyn in a single battle, Noctis ascends the throne and sacrifices himself, using Crystal and the Lucii Ring to clear Starscourge from Eos. In the afterlife, with the help of Lunafreya, Noctis destroys Ardyn's spirit. In the midst of credit and post-credit scenes, Noctis opened up to his comrades before the final battle, and rested with Lunafreya in the afterlife.

Narration expanded with downloadable content later (DLC). In the Gladiolus Episode, Gladiolu left the group to test his strength against Gilgamesh's Final Fantasy characters after their first confrontation with Ravus. The Prompto episode occurred after Ardyn deceived Noctis to throw the Prompto from the train to Tenebrae, and focused on his origins as the son of clones Verstael, designed as one of the Niflheim Magitek soldiers. With the help of Aranea, Prompto defeated Verstael - who transferred his soul to the creation of Magitek Immortalis to conquer Eos - before heading to Gralea. In the Episode Ignis , Ignis's allies with Ravus are disappointed after the raging Leviathan. After finding Lunafreya dead and Noctis unconscious, they are ambushed by Ardyn; Ignis uses the Lucii Ring to save Noctis, which makes him lose his eyesight. There is also an alternative that ends at the main story in which Ignis surrenders to Ardyn instead of confronting him, triggering a chain of events that leads to both Ravus and Noctis alive after the final battle at Insomnia ten years later. In story mode for the multiplayer expansion of the Comrade, the player controls a survivor of Kingsglaive, the Regis bodyguard who left him during Niflheim's attack on Lucis. Despite the mistrust of the people, Kingsglaive helped defend Lestallum's last human fortress while experiencing the vision of the Noctis resort on Angelgard island. Drawn to Angelgard, Kingsglaive confronts Bahamut in battle and is released from their betrayal, dedicating themselves to protect Angelgard from Daemon during Noctis sleep.

Development

Final Fantasy XV was mainly developed by Square Enix's Business Division 2, creator and developer of the Final Fantasy franchise. Additional studio help development including HexaDrive, XPEC Entertainment, Plusmile, Umbra, and Streamline Studios. Staff including director Hajime Tabata; producer Shinji Hashimoto; lead author Saori Itamuro, who wrote the script based on the original manuscript by Kazushige Nojima; and art directors Tomohiro Hasegawa, Yusuke Naora and Isamu Kamikokuryo. The character design is done by Tetsuya Nomura and Roberto Ferrari, with later revisions by Naora. The main character outfit was designed by Hiromu Takahara, the main designer for the Japanese fashion house Roen. The soundtrack for Final Fantasy XV was composed primarily by Yoko Shimomura, while the real-time and CGI cutscene was directed by Takeshi Nozue from Visual Works, Square Enix's CGI production studio. The logo illustration is done by the regular series artist Yoshitaka Amano.

The development started in 2006 as a spin-off title for the PlayStation 3 called Final Fantasy Versus XIII . It was announced as part of Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy , a game subseries linked by common myth, and runs on Square Enix's Crystal Tools machine. Developed by the team behind the Kingdom Hearts series, it's meant to be a darker entry in the Final Fantasy series than is allowed in the main series. Nomura is an original director, a designer, and creates initial concepts and scenarios. The project is experiencing prolonged and problematic developments, making only fragmentary appearances over the next six years. In early 2007, the project scale prompted rebranding talks as the next mainstream entry. With the internal launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it was decided to turn it into a mainstream entry, with the proposed PS3 version being canceled due to technical issues. The game engine is also changing, switching to the company's new gaming machine, Luminous Studio. At the time of rebranding and switching to the next generation console in 2012, Versus XIII is described as being at 20-25% complete, with Tabata saying never formed.

When Tabata took over from Nomura, the entire development team of direshuffle and development resumed, though he worked as a co-director with Nomura until the end of 2013 to ensure the project remained as true as possible with its original vision. Among the changes were the removal of the opening of the original story, and the replacement of the original hero Stella Nox Fleuret with the same named Lunafreya. Connection to Fabula Nova Crystallis is also reduced, with the terminology of branding and myth removed for help in game marketing. The thematic, aesthetic and design elements are maintained because of their core place in the world and backstory. The main concept behind Final Fantasy XV is a "reality based fantasy", with a world very similar to Earth and has a fantasy element that gradually creeps into normal settings. In pursuit of this, the location in Eos is based on real world locations such as Tokyo, Venice, and the Bahamas.

Universe", the project is divided into two parts; media designed to reach a wider audience than may be managed by games only, and additional content related to games like ports to other hardware and DLC. The project was first revealed at a March 2016 press event titled "Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV ". Tabata then states that those who have just played the game will lose the context for story events that are featured on other related media.

The two main parts of "Final Fantasy XV Universe" are Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV feature movies and the original net animation Fraternity: Final Fantasy XV Fraternity is produced by the anime studio A-1 Pictures under the supervision of Square Enix; the narration focuses on the backstories of Noctis and his friends. The series was released online between March and September 2016. Kingsglaive , which received a limited theater release in 2016, is a collaboration between Visual Works and Western studios including Digic Pictures and Image Engine; story, which mainly focuses on the original character, the recycled story element is cut from the opening narration of Final Fantasy XV .

Also forming part of the project is the Platinum Demo: Final Fantasy XV , a game demo detailing an incident in childhood Noctis associated with the Brotherhood event; Justice Monsters Five , mobile games based on minigame from Final Fantasy XV active from August 2016 to March 2017; A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV , the beat 'em up campaign featuring Regis as a playable character; Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV , virtual reality simulation game released in 2017 for PlayStation VR; and Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire, a massively multiplayer online strategy game published by Machine Zone in 2017 and developed by their Epic Action subsidiary.

Release

Originally announced in 2006 along with XIII and Type-0 , the game was publicly renamed in 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, with regular updates on titles beginning the following year. A demo titled Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae was released in March 2015 as a limited addition to Final Fantasy Type-0 HD . The localization of the game is handled by Dan Inoue, who uses different accents for characters to show their origin in different parts of Eos. In addition to English, Japanese and European, the game is localized for Latin America with Latin American and Brazilian Portuguese texts: this is the first time a Final Fantasy is localized into these languages.

The preliminary worldwide release, September 30, was announced at the "Uncovered" event. Despite this intended date, further polishing work resulted in dates being pushed back to 29 November. Further improvements applied to the game via the First Day patch were released simultaneously with the game. The game is published in several editions, called "First Day", "Deluxe", and "Ultimate Collector Edition". The "Deluxe" edition includes Blu-ray Edition Kingsglaive , while the "Ultimate Collector Edition" includes the Kingsglaive and the Brotherhood version with additional Luna related recordings. In 2018, a version of the game called Royal Edition was released, containing all DLCs published to that point in addition to additional stories and games in addition to technical improvements.

The version for Microsoft Windows was released on March 6, 2018. Square Enix is developing a port with Nvidia using an upgraded version of the Luminous Studio engine, featuring improved graphics and all DLCs. These improvements and additions are also released as part of the Royal Edition's exclusive console . Another version, titled Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition , was released in February 2018 for iOS and Android. This game was developed jointly by Square Enix, SummerTimeStudio, and XPEC Entertainment. Development began in 2015 after the release of Episode Duscae ; This game is produced by Kosei Ito, who is the producer on the first major Square Enix Tabata title Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII .

Several pieces of DLC have been created for the game by a smaller development team of Final Fantasy XV core staff . The team is supervised by Tabata and is led by new producer Haruyoshi Sawatari. Both free and paid DLCs are announced, with paid DLC being a necessity due to the overall production cost. Among the DLCs are additional story elements intended to address the player's criticism of the game's narrative structure and the missing details. The main DLC episodes focusing on filling the narrative gap associated with Noctis friends - Gladiolus Episodes , Episode Prompto and Episode Ignis - were released respectively, respectively in March, June and December 2017. The multiplayer mode called Comrades was released in November 2017, with Final Fantasy XV being the first major player of the Final Final Fantasy to include multiplayer content. Episode Ignis is meant to be the last story-based DLC, but positive player feedback generates Square Enix developing more content that focuses on other characters including Ardyn. Other DLCs include temporary events including the "Moogle Chocobo Carnival" event and collaboration with Assassin's Creed Origins.

Reception

Final Fantasy XV has received "generally favorable" reviews from critics for all versions, according to Metacritic aggregator reviews. Japanese game magazine Famitsu gave both game versions a score of 38 points from 40. Various game designers declared Final Fantasy XV their favorite game of 2016, including > Final serial Maker Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi, Atlus' Shigeo Komori, Koei Tecmo's Takashi Morinaka, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Teruyuki Toriyama and Shuhei Yoshida.

Opinions about the story of Final Fantasy XV are mixed, although the main character is praised for his chemistry. Andrew Reiner applauded the change to a simple simple plot after the complex knowledge of Final Fantasy XIII . Game Informer ' Peter Brown of GameSpot and Philip Kollar of Polygon praised worldly activity and character interaction, with Kollar calling Noctis's friend "heart-drag" game, in contrast, Jonathan Leack from Game Revolution found that characters had no interest during the early part of the campaign, and Adam Beck called the main story and character "monumental disappointment". A minimal representation of supporting characters is also often blamed. David Roberts of GamesRadar , Monthly Electronic Games ' s Mollie L. Patterson and Destructoid ' s Chris Carter also notes an important part played by an expanded media game in the grounded or perfected main story.

Visual and realistic styles were received positively, with Vince Ingenito enjoying the unusual use of realistic aesthetic details for the city and the environment. Roberts, Brown, Leack, Beck and Kollar praised the design of the open world and the depth of detail, in addition to its scale and resemblance to the open world of recent Western games. Beck also recorded moments of beautiful setpiece in appearance despite the weak narrative elements and bewildering or complicated gameplay. Leack positively recorded the main eye-catching cast design, which he felt helped maintain the connection during the early part of the game. Shimomura scores were also received positively by critics.

Gameplay is praised for its fast speed and attractive mechanics despite its lack of depth compared to other action games, with some reviewers comparing it to Kingdom Hearts ; Patterson positively compared the normal battle with CEG's cutscene-exclusive battle of the previous Square Enix title, while Leack called the Kingdom Hearts battle system meet Dissidia and praised its depth and accessibility.. Digital Spy ' s Kirk McKeand praised the behavior of Noctis friends in battle, saying they are an effective support unit. The second linear bill drew criticism, with Roberts predicting that it would be one of the most divisive elements of the game. The call looks spectacular, but has little meaning in the game or is too difficult to activate. Some reviewers have noted the camera's behavior in games that are sometimes uncertain.

Sales

In Japan, the PS4 version topped the Japanese charts, selling 690,471 units. The Xbox One version sold nearly 3,800 units. The total sales of both versions reached 694,262 units, with game sales increasing console sales for PS4 over the previous week with more than 42,000 units. Sales of the second week in the region were 79,792 units, down 88% from the launch week and causing the game to fall to fifth place. Different ratings in January of the following year put Japanese sales of Final Fantasy XV between 900,000 and one million copies. In the UK all-format game chart that ends December 3, Final Fantasy XV is the second-largest launch of the series after Final Fantasy XIII . According to the December data released by the NPD Group, Final Fantasy XV is the second best-selling title in the months behind Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare . This game is also the title of the best-selling PS4 this month, and saw the month of launch of the best console in franchise history.

In the first twenty-four hours, Square Enix reported that Final Fantasy XV has sent five million units worldwide in both physical delivery and digital sales - numbers that allow the game to "break even" on cost development. This gave Final Fantasy XV the biggest launch of the franchise to date, Japan's first day of digital sales for the game up to that point, and made notes for physical shipments and downloads in mainland Asia. Commenting on the large number, Tabata reveals that strong sales save Final Fantasy franchise as a whole, which has seen a decline in commercial success in recent years. According to Square Enix, shipments have reached more than six million worldwide in January 2017. In May of the same year, Square announced the game and Rise of the Tomb Raider helped boost sales and profits for 2016- Fiscal year 2017. In the next interview, Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura stated that the game has sold seven million copies worldwide in January 2018, ranking it as a "great success".
