Availability
Sarsaparilla is not available in most countries, although many pubs and most supermarket chains in the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Australia store soft drinks with sarsaparilla flavor, and sarsaparilla remain available in the UK as a legacy of the simplicity movement. Sarsaparilla Australia has a different taste from American root beer or sarsaparilla.
Sarsi is a sarsaparilla-based drink popular in Asia.
Sarsaparilla is produced on a small scale in the UK. Baldwin produces Sarsaparilla warm drinks in the UK and has been doing so continuously since 1844. Produced at Walworth Road, London, and available in cake and mash shops in East End London, where it is popular, as well as available in some supermarkets. In the northern part of England, sarsaparilla was produced by Fitzpatrick's, Britain's last English bar, showing its prior importance for the simplicity movement there.
The classic American Sarsaparilla is not made from sarsaparilla plant extracts, a tropical wine that is much related to lilies. Originally made of a mixture of birch oil and sassafras, dried root bark from a sassafras tree. Sassafras was widely used as a home remedy in the 19th century - taken in sufficient doses it caused sweating, which some people think has health benefits. Sarsaparilla apparently debuted as a patented, easy-to-take sassafras, just as Coca-Cola was first marketed in 1885 as a remedy for hangovers, headaches and morphine addiction. In addition to the effects of these ingredients, soda was very popular in the United States at the time, due to the belief that carbonated water has health benefits.
