Palmar understanding reflex (sometimes just called holding reflex ) is a primitive reflex. The fetus may show reflex in utero as early as 16 weeks into the gestation period, and continues until the age of five or six months. When an object is placed in the baby's hand and the palms are stroked, the fingers will close in a reflex, because the object is grasped through the palmar grasp. The grip is strong but unpredictable; although it may be able to support the child's weight, they can also release their grips abruptly and without warning. Backward motion can be induced by stroking the back or side of the hand.

Significance
If Palmar understands reflexes lasting beyond 2 to 4 months, he will delay or affect functions such as holding toys, removing objects from the hand as well as hand-manipulation skills. Palmar's understanding of reflexes may be a sign of anterior cerebral artery syndrome in adults.
