Louis Cyr ( French pronunciation: Ã, [lwi si?] ; > Cyprien-NoÃÆ' Â © Cyr , October 10, 1864 - November 10, 1912) was a strong Canadian Frenchman with a career spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recorded achievements, including lifting £ 500 (227 kg) with one finger and backlifting 4,337 pounds (1,967 kg), showed Cyr to be, according to former International Federation of BodyBuilding & amp; Ben Weider's fitness chairman, the strongest man ever to live.

Initial years

Cyr was born in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Quebec, Canada. Coming from a strong French-Canadian family, he began to develop extraordinary powers at an early age. While the father of Louis has an average proportion, his mother is almost Amazon, recorded weighing 265 pounds at 6 '1 ".He in turn has a father of 6' 4" and  £ 260 From the age of 12 Cyr worked in the wood camp during the winter and at family farm leftover this year. Discovering his extraordinary strength at a very young age, he impressed his co-workers with his strength. After studying the story, Cyr attempts to imitate the practice of legendary legendary Milo of Croton, who as a child holds his calves on his shoulders, continues to carry him as he grows into an adult bull and he becomes a grown man. The Cyr calf, however, dashed one day, kicked his back, after which he even started carrying a bag of wheat / 4 miles (0.40 km) daily, adding 2 pounds (0.91 kg) daily. According to one of his biographers, his mother decided "he should let his hair grow, like Samson in the Bible." He's curled up on a regular basis.

Louis began his strong career at the age of 17, after some publicity came about because of an incident when young Louis was reported to have lifted a farm-laden cart out of the mud that made it jam. He was matched in a contest against Michaud of Quebec, who was recognized as Canada's strongest man at the time. Cyr hit him in a test of removal of heavy stones by lifting granite stones weighing 480 pounds (220 kg).

In 1878 the Cyr family immigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts in the United States. In Lowell Cyr changed his name from Cyprien-Noà © to Louis, as it is easier said in English. Once again his great strength made him famous. At the age of 17, he weighed 230 pounds (104 kg). He entered his first strongman contest in Boston at the age of 18, lifting horses off the ground; an adult stallion is placed on a platform with 2 iron rods attached allowing Cyr to get a better grip. The horse weighs at least 3 / 4 short ton (0.68 t).

Rise to be famous

In 1884 Louis married Melina (nÃÆ' Â © e Courtois) while Louis worked as a woodcutter. The following year he and his wife returned to Lowell, hoping to capitalize on his fame there. The Maritimes tour was organized, and while it may benefit organizers, Cyr does not benefit financially. He then started touring Quebec with his family in a show they call "The Troupe Cyr".

Immediately proving his remarkable strength, he was urged by friends to enter a fascinating world, albeit very precarious from strong professionals, especially lifting heavy heavy loads or being shot.

From 1883 to 1885, Cyr served as a police officer in Montreal, Quebec. After this he went on tour with a group that included wrestlers, boxers, and weightlifting. He entered a strong competition in March 1886, in Quebec City, against powerful Canadian strongman David Michaud. Cyr lifted a 218 pound (99 kg) barbell with one hand (for 158 pounds or 72 kg Michaud) and weighed 2,371 pounds (1,075 kg) on his back to his opponent £ 2,071 (939 kg) for won the title of the strongest man in the country.

With a little reward at the beginning of his professional weightlifting, Louis is forced to find another job, destiny takes over his decision when he seems to step in, and breaks up, with physical strength, a dangerous knife fight. Reports of the day reminded how Cyr paralyzed and subjugated the fighters and then got a citizen captured, carrying two criminals, one under each arm, to the local police station. With this remarkable reference, Louis joined the police, becoming a few years as a sincere police officer.

Wise with his earnings, Louis left the Police and bought a tavern/restaurant in St. Louis. CunÃÆ' © gonde, where he also featured a gym like so many places like that in his time being a Mecca for athletes and power strugglers. Cyr is well acquainted with the famous John L. Sullivan, being one of the few who oppose Sullivan's orders to drink when he drinks. Sullivan is known as The Boston Strong Boy and is very powerful, but not in the Cyr class. Cyr, delighted in his own environment, defeated all comers when challenged to perform.

Louis Cyr's exploits have been well publicized in 'Pink Un' (the paper is actually pink, though it is often 'blue') or Police Gazette published by Richard K. Fox, the famous owner and promoter of other power athletes, for example. Travis, Sandow, etc. Fox offers a side bet of $ 5,000 to anyone who can defeat Cyr with all his strength. Promoted by Fox, Louis went on tour around 1885-1891 defeating, among others: Sebastian Miller, Bienkowski, or Cyclops (who can actually bend coins), August Johnson, and Richard Pennell, plus constantly challenging, without success, Eugen Sandow, with a sincere diamond-studded belt to give to the winner, should such an event occur. It never happened. Sandow is an ingenious but not stupid performer, and avoids such challenges throughout his honorable career after his initial mistake, as when he was beaten by McCann.

There is no doubt that Cyr is an unusual person of size and size, the latter often sparking debate. Although Dr. Dudley A. Sargent, physical director of Harvard University famous for measuring Louis Cyr in 1895 when Cyr was 32 years old and weighed 291 pounds (132 kg). Sargent noted the height of Cyr as 5'8.5 ".Other measurements, mostly on the conservative side compared to other biographers, were neck - 20 inches (51 cm), biceps - 20 inches (51 cm), forearms - 16.3 inches (41 cm), wrist - 8.2 inch (21 cm), chest (normal) - 55.2 inches (140 cm), broad chest - 60 inches (150 cm), waist - 47.4 inches (120 cm ), hip - 48.1 inches (122 cm), thigh - 28.5 inches (72 cm), knee - 17 ", and calf - 19.3 inches (49 cm), much shorter than the 28" quoted, but it may be 23 "later when the weight is higher. 10.3 inches (26 cm) ankle and shoulder width with calipers.... opposite deltoids 25.6 inches (65 cm). The above details are only one set of numbers relating to the size of Cyr, others recorded by Willoughby when for example Cyr was 47 years old (in 1910) gave him 23 calves, neck 22 3/4 ", biceps 21 1/2" normal chest 59 1/2 "and thigh 33" with other parts to adjust weight gain, is at a time of weight 365 lbs. Ben Weider, special for accessing family archives, even more generously provides 24-inch (61 cm) sleeve size, front 19 inches (48 cm), and a disjointed, 28-inch calm (71 cm), following a line similar to Jowett.

Reputation as a strong person

While some Cyr forces may have been exaggerated for years, some are documented and remain impressive. These include:

  • lifting platform on his back holding 18 men with a total of 1967 kg
  • lifting weights 534 pounds (242 kg) with one finger
  • push the freight car onto a slope
  • At age 19, he lifted rocks from the ground to his shoulders, with an official weight of 514 pounds
  • He beat Eugen Sandow's pressed notes (and hence the heaviest burden raised with one hand) with 2 pounds (0.91 kg) to a total of 273 pounds (124 kg).

Perhaps his greatest achievement occurred in 1895, when he reportedly raised 4,337 pounds (1,967 kg) on his back in Boston by placing 18 people on the platform and lifting him. One of his most impressive strengths took place in Montreal on October 12, 1891. Louis withdrew the pull of four horse drafts (two in each hand) as prospective grooms stood broke their whip to make the horses try harder, a the achievements he showed again in Ottawa with queen Queen Victoria's team during his royal visit. While in Ottawa, he volunteered with the police when they took deportations to round up a group of local criminals; they reject it by claiming he will be too slow because his body is large. He challenged the regular officers for the race, hit the majority, and they took him.

He was on patrol as a police officer between 1883-1885 in Sainte-Cunà © Å © gonde, now known as Petite-Bourgogne (Little Burgundy) in Montreal. Both Parc Louis-Cyr and Place des Hommes-Forts ("Strongman Square") are named after him. The statues are located at the Place des Hommes-Forts and the Musà © à © e de la Civilization in Quebec City. The high school in his hometown of Napierville is also named after him.

Not because of his own fault, much of Cyr's appointment, like his size, has been exaggerated or misquoted. In particular, his famous retrieval back in Boston, of 18 men on the platform, is usually generously estimated at 4,300 pounds, allowing for very heavy platforms with at most £ 500, meaning that every average person would weigh about 211 pound

Cyr was also credited with a 273.75 Â £ (124.17 kg) pressed side with one arm (right), an elevator witnessed by British champion Tom Pevier, who described it more like 'Jerk Press. 'The dumbbell, which is big dealt in thick, is raised to the shoulders with two hands, before moving overhead one hand. Dumbel Cyr is often so heavy that many respectable strong men are unable to lift them off the floor, let alone lift them up on their heads.

One particular dumbbell of Cyr is weighed, when empty, Â £ 202 (92 kg). it was the same bell that had beaten the impetus of the former athlete of strength, exchanged by its owner, 280-pound police chief Joseph Moquin of Quebec (who could and did bend the burden) for the modern set of York weights, thus falling into the possession of the late Bob Hoffman and Mike Dietz. By Strength & amp; Health Magazine , Hoffman, after several tries, was able to bend it, as well as a lighter 150 lb weight. Sig Klein, John Grimek later also bowed to press her, half a dozen times or more late one afternoon, when weight was raised to 269.5 pounds, adding, as it did, the type of lead from Mark Berrys classic book, Simple Physical Exercise. Therefore the reason the book was never reprinted.

Cyr is a great man in every way, both heart and size, being a great trencherman, eating more than four normal men. Up to 6 pounds of meat at one meal... a genuine gourmand, gaining enormous weight in his last years. His lightest weight was when he competed against August Johnson, then only 270 pounds, although the contest condition normally approached 320 pounds. Cyr's wife, Melina, on the other hand, never weighed more than 100 pounds.

In 1886 Cyr met and defeated Richard Pennell, then Pennell became 40, and Louis was only 23. In 1888 on October 1 in Berthierville, Quebec, he raised 3,536 pounds lb/1, 604 kg of pig iron for his first recording behind the lift.

On December 1, 1891 at Sohmer Park in Montreal, before about 10,000 people, Cyr rejected the pull of four draft horses, two sides each, pulling fisted hands, regardless of the men whipping their whips to push the horses to pulling harder and pressing the thighs.

In January 1892, Cyr began his career in England with partner Horace Barre, who caused a lot of interest and curiosity on his London debut at the Royal Aquarium, with 5,000 people packing the theater to witness Cyr's actions and witness the open challenge to a vast, many celebrities are in the audience, with side bets of Ã, £ 1,000 (Equivalent with around Ã, Â £ 98,070.00 in 2015). On this historic event, on January 19, 1892, Cyr pressed 273.75 db dumbbells. Years later, Doc Aumont, Louis's son-in-law, borrowed Cyr's famous dumbbell to the Weider's Your Physique office in Montreal for a month, for more than 500 people trying and failing to lift the burden.

During his first London show, many other accomplishments followed, all above contemporary records, culminating in the famous Backlift. Putting men on a heavy platform leaning on two lanes, Louis ducked under the platform, put his back under the center, and lifted both the tool and the passengers out of the trestles. The weight on this occasion is estimated at £ 3,635. Traveling extensively throughout England he also visited Scotland, raising and carrying for a distance of one of Dinnie's famous rocks. Cyr is very popular in the UK, pioneered by celebrities and royalty, including Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria.

After returning to the United States on May 27, Cyr did his best in Boston, with more than 4,000 pounds estimated. Consist of 18 'big' men.

During the most active period, circa 1896, on March 31 he did a clean and shit (net was a misnomer) of 347 pounds, then a World record, without any knowledge or skill, little if any immersion.

Reputable witness Oscar Mathes says the elevator is closer to the straight press. Cyr committed a one-handed deadlift with a 525-pound dumbbell (238 kg), made even harder by the fact that the bar was 1.5 inches thick. On 7 and 8 May 1896, he crucified a cross with 97.25 pounds (44.11 kg) in his right hand, and 88 pounds (40 kg) to his left. Some authors often give him credit by holding one arm.- 131.25 pounds (59.53 kg). He also dumbbell pressed  £ 162 for 36 reps, did lift one finger, first with 552 pounds and the next day made it 553  £ (251 kg). Raised through one hand, force is not specified, but most suspects use the hand and thigh method, 987 pounds (448 kg). plus, using the hands and thighs, 1,897.25 pounds (860,58 kg).

For many years Louis imagined himself to be a modern biblical Simon with matching hair. In the folds of his long hair, he would tie thirty-five pounds of weight, one on each side, and one in the middle, with three weights hanging on his scalp, he would also spin, spinning the load around his head. With a co-incident on his visit to England, the top of the pops is a short song entitled 'Get Your Hair Cut'... Louis must have caught the cue, because after that he always wears short hair.

More arm and shoulder strength was shown by his acrobats piled four fifty pounds of weight one on top of the other on his bent arm, balancing them as he walked across the room.
