Most glue is designed to glue paper and cards together, and not as strong as some liquid-based variants. They can be used for craft and design, use of office and at school. Now there is a permanent, washable, acid-free, non-toxic, solvent-free, and dyed (eg to see where glue is being used more easily).

In 1969, the German company Henkel discovered the glue glue after learning the "ease of turning" and comfort of lipstick applicator. This product was released with the Pritt Stick brand. In 1971, Pritt Stick was sold in 38 countries, in 2001 at 121. The first versatile, solvent-free glue sticks that could be used for other materials (eg wood, glass and some plastics) were "PowerPritt", which was marketed in 2003. There is also "Pritt X", which was launched in 2010.
Glue sticks are made by many brands and each can have different features. Various brands, such as Scotch, UHU, Kores, Giotto, Snopake, and Bostik U-Stick make glue stick. Generic brands also produce glue, using a twist action.

Glue sticks can come in a variety of sizes, the most common being 8g, 25g, 36g, and 40g.
