Art Therapy Program
The Art Therapy program was created in 1973 by Robert Ault, and is one of the oldest in the country. The degree program is two years and, the completion of this program gets students the Master of Science in Art Therapy Counseling. The program provides students with the necessary training to work with diverse populations through a creative process. The Emporia State University program is approved by the American Art Therapy Association. Students who pursue a degree in Art Therapy are eligible to enroll in a Dual Curriculum that enables students to earn the Master of Science in Clinical Counseling as well. Receiving both degrees gives the students eligibility to obtain a license from the Behavioral Science Regulatory Agency.
Three instructors educate students in the Department of Art Therapy: Jessica Stallings ATR-BC, LPC, AS, Libby Schmanke MS, ATR-BC, LCAC, and Gaelynn Wolf Bordonaro PhD. ATR-BC. Stallings is published as a coauthor in the journal Arts and Psychotherapy for his research in best practice with children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorders. Schmanke is the author of Art Therapy and Substance Abuse: Enabling Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction and Bordonaro is on the board of directors for the American Art Therapy Association.
Each spring, the Arts Therapy program hosts the Art Therapy Day Discovery Conference that began in 1974. The conference is open to the public and includes the annual keynote speakers as well as breakout sessions, presentations on the subject of the Art Therapy in question, a silent auction, and lunch provided. Various individuals attending the conference include: current students, professional art therapists, counselors, therapists, social workers, and psychologists.
National Teachers Hall of Fame
National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF) is a non-profit organization that honors exceptional school teachers. NTHF was founded in 1989 by an organizational consortium including Emporia State, School Alumni Associations, Emporia City, Emporia Public Schools, and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. NTHF has a museum on the Emporia State campus that honors teachers who are inaugurated. Every June, the Hall of Fame includes the top five educators in the United States.
Memorial for Fallen Educators
On June 13, 2013, NTHF executive director Carol Strickland, along with former ESU President Michael Shonrock, Bill Maness, representing US Senator Jerry Moran, and former mayor Rob Gilligan, were broken by a one-room school located in Emporia. State campus to build a memorial for teachers who have fallen in "duty". The Sandy Hook Elementary School photo shoot is the ultimate inspiration for the memorial. On June 6, 2014, granite warning markers were placed together with a granite bench. Official dedication on June 12, 2014.
On September 21, 2015, US Senator Moran of Kansas introduced the bill to the United States Congress to set a warning as "National Memorial for Enlightened Educators". If the bill is passed by the House of Representatives and the US Senate, the monument will then be signed by the President of the United States, and the warning will not be part of the Park Service and no federal funds will be used.
Praise and rating
Emporia State University Teachers College is one of only four post-secondary institutions in the country - along with Alverno College, Stanford University, and the University of Virginia - to be identified as an Arthur Levine Model Education Model program by a 2006 national study on teacher education programs Educating School Teachers.
