Kydex is a line of thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride materials made by Sekisui SPI. It has a wide range of applications, including for aircraft bulkheads, gun gloves, sheaths, and for knives.
Similar acrylic polyvinyl chloride materials (Acrylic-polyvinyl chloride IPK) are produced by Emco Plastics and Interstate Plastics, which carry almost identical properties with additional layers for screen printing.

Development
Kydex sheets originally manufactured in 1965 by Rohm and Haas, have been designed for use in plane interiors. In 1987, the product line was purchased by Kydex, LLC, formerly Kleerdex Company, LLC, which produces materials called Sekisui SPI at a location in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Characteristics
It is an acrylic-polyvinyl chloride composite engineered for thermoforming fabrication, and combines the properties of both acrylic and polyvinyl chloride components. From acrylic, it obtains stiffness and formability; of PVC, toughness, chemical resistance and good interior finish rate. The thickness of the sheet ranges from.028 to.500 inches and can be thermoform, post formed, brake formed and laminated.
- The flexible modulus is 2,758 MPa (400,000 psi)
- Parts formed from sheets will be stiff and will see moderate deformation when loaded. This is very important in the inner section with thin wall sections.
- A relatively hard thermoplastic, with 90 hardness on a Rockwell R scale. This hardness, combined with a grained surface, increases the abrasion resistance.
- Highly flammable, UL 94 classification V-0
For some applications used as a skin substitute, where it has the following advantages:
- Water resistant
- Scratch resistant (Rockwell scale "R" violence 90)
- Hold the shape better, and will not stretch or shrink under normal conditions
- Friction is lower.
