Armstrong Power Center is a coal-fired power station in the City of Washington, Armstrong County along the Allegheny River across Mahoning Creek and Templeton, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Kittanning, Pennsylvania, the unit began operations in 1958/1959. The factory has a capacity of 356 MW. The Armstrong Power Plant Chimney, built in 1982 is 1,011 feet (308 m) tall and costs $ 13 million.
The power plant closed on September 1, 2012 by FirstEnergy Corp. headquartered in Akron, Ohio, along with six other plants in the tri-county grid to comply with federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines governing Mercury and the new Air Toxics Standards (MATS) and other environmental and air quality requirements. The decision was made not to invest in some smaller factories considering it would be quite expensive to install scrubbers and other air pollution control upgrades to keep the plant operating.
This facility is owned by Allegheny Energy Supply.
