Samsonite International S.A. (SEHK: Ã, 1910) is an American baggage manufacturer and retailer, with products ranging from large suitcases to small toiletries and briefcases. The company was founded in Denver. The company's registered office is in Luxembourg and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

History
The company was founded in Denver, Colorado, on March 10, 1910 by Blackhawk, Colorado-born baggage seller Jesse Shwayder (1882-1970) as Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company. A religious man, Shwayder named one of Samson's first cases, after a strong Biblical man, and began using the Samsonite trademark in 1941 because of his tapered vulcanis fiber suitcase, introduced in 1939. In 1965 after Samsonite's suitcase became his best-selling product, the company changed its name to Samsonite. Over the years, a subsidiary of Samsonite Furniture Co. making folding chairs and card tables in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The Shwayder family sold the company to Beatrice Foods in 1973. Samsonite operated with relative independence within Beatrice until 1986, when it was sold to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Subsequently, the company underwent several ownership changes in the 1980s and entered the 1990s. First, Samsonite is separated from the TRC as part of the E-II, which is under the control of American Brands. E-II went bankrupt and changed its name to Astrum International. In 1993, Astrum bought an American Tourister suitcase, equipping Samsonite. In 1995, Astrum split up, and independent Samsonite (now including American Tourister) once again headquartered in Denver.
The Denver plant, which employs 4,000 at its peak, was closed in May 2001. Samsonite's headquarters moved from Denver to Mansfield, Massachusetts, after a change of ownership in May 2005. CVC Capital Partners Ltd. in July 2007 became the fifth owner of Samsonite in 21 years.
Samsonite moved its US marketing and sales offices from 91 Main Street in Warren, Rhode Island, to Mansfield, Massachusetts, effective September 1, 2005.
In 2005 the company was acquired by Marcello Bottoli, former chief executive Louis Vuitton as president and CEO, to pull them out of a long slump. Bottoli left the company in 2009.
In July 2007, financial investor CVC Capital Partners acquired Samsonite for $ 1.7 billion.
On September 2, 2009, Samsonite Company Store LLC (the US Retail Division), officially known as Swainsonite Company Stores Inc., filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. The company plans to close up to 50% of its stores and stop the "Black Label" brand in the United States.
In June 2011 Samsonsite raised 1.25 billion US dollars in an initial public offering in Hong Kong.
In August 2012 Samsonite paid $ 35 million in cash to buy Hartmann's high-end suitcase brand, which was founded in 1877.
In March 2016 Samsonite agreed to buy luxury luggage maker Tumi for $ 1.8 billion in its largest acquisition.

Products
Started in 1961, Samsonite manufactures and distributes Lego building toys for the North American market under license from a Danish holding company. The licensing dispute ended the US agreement in 1972, but Samsonite remained a distributor in Canada until 1986. Albert H. Reckler, then head of military and export sales for the baggage division, brought the idea to produce and sell Lego in the US. to Samsonite. He and Stan A. Clamage were instrumental in building the Lego brand in the United States. This is part of the overall expansion of the company into toy manufacturing in the 1960s that was abandoned in the 1970s.

Forty percent of all Samsonite hard luggage is manufactured at its factory in Nashik, India.
