History

Running Strong for American Indian Youth was founded in 1986. by Gene Krizek, and Billy Mills (Oglala Lakota), the only American who has won a gold medal in the 10,000-meter race he won at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Mills, who is a national spokesman for Running Strong, started the charity as a "giveaway" to give back to the community that helped him succeed, according to the Lakota tradition. Mills was awarded the 2012 Presidential Medal by Barack Obama, the second-highest civilian honor in the United States, in recognition of his services to help American Indian families through Running Strong for Indian American Youth.

Running Strong is governed by five members, the majority of Native American Board of Directors. His work began mainly in Pine Ridge Indian Reserves, Indian Rosebud Reservation, and Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, all in South Dakota. Running Strong begins its work with programs that focus on food and nutrition, women's health, education, and seasonal needs. Gradually, the service expanded to serve other American Indian communities. However, Running Strong continues to do much of its work on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where Billy Mills grew up.
