Geography
Giresun is an agricultural region and its lower territory, near the Black Sea coast, is the largest producer of hazelnuts in Turkey; a Giresun folk song says, "I will not eat a hazelnut unless you are by my side", while others tell about a lover who was shot dead under a candlenut tree.
Forests and grasslands cover high mountain areas, and in many places there are mining of copper, zinc, iron and other metals. Villages in remote mountains, with bad roads and little in the way of infrastructure. The hills are too steep for most forms of agriculture, and as a result, cornbread is a traditional food, because wheat can not be grown.
The climate is typical of this stretch of the Black Sea coast, which is very wet. Local flora includes bilberries (Turkish "taflan").
