Charles Rene Strong (born August 2, 1960) is an American football coach and former player. Strong is currently the head coach at the University of South Florida. Strong holds many assistant coaching positions before becoming head coach at the University of Louisville in 2010. During his four-year stint in Louisville, he leads the Cardinals to a 37-15 record and reaches bowl games every season, including Sugar 2013 Bowl. After the 2013 season he left Louisville to become head coach at the University of Texas. He was fired by Texas after the 2016 season with a 16-21 record in three seasons. One month after leaving Texas, Strong was hired in South Florida.

Charles Rene Strong was born in Batesville, Arkansas, one of six children from Delois Ramsey's mother. Strong's father, also named Charles Strong, was a teacher and trainer in Luxora, Arkansas and never married Ramsey. After writing for four years (1980-1983) as a center-back at the University of Central Arkansas, Strong joined the coaching staff of the University of Florida as a graduate assistant in 1983. Initial position
Strong's first full-time coaching job was in Southern Illinois in 1986, where he trained wide receivers. He then assumes defensive coaching tasks in Florida, Ole Miss, and Notre Dame.
South Carolina
In 1999, Strong joined the South Carolina Gamecocks as a defensive coordinator. His stiff defense and charismatic personality created a rumor that he might be the first black head coach at the SEC, but his job offer was very slim. Sylvester Croom finally broke the color barrier in the SEC coaching ranks in 2004.
Florida
Strong was hired as a defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators before the 2003 season. Florida head coach Ron Zook was fired in mid-2004 Gator season, but continued to train until the bowl game; Strong served as interim coach of the Gators for one game, December 2004 Peach Bowl. Florida lost the match, 27-10, to Miami. When Urban Meyer was hired as Florida head coach, Strong was the only assistant coach retained from Zook's staff.
In a January 2009 interview with Orlando Sentinel , Strong expressed his belief that race plays a big role in the reason that he has not been offered a head coach job in 2009. Strong, whose white wife, especially cited the prospective employers' intermarriage. Strong is a 2009 finalist for Broyles Awards, awarded annually to the country's top assistant coach.
Louisville
He became head coach of 21 football at Louisville University on December 9, 2009. In a telephone interview later that day with ESPN.com columnist Pat Forde, former Indianapolis Colts chief coach Tony Dungy said of Strong, "When they see what he can do, will make a lot of people disappointed because they do not hire him any faster. "
Strong led Louisville to victory at Sugar Bowl 2013 over his former team, Florida Gators, with a final score of 33-23. It was the biggest annoyance in terms of the point spread over every BCS bowl game since the start of BCS in 1998, when Florida entered the game favored by almost two goals.
On January 23, 2013, Strong gained $ 1.4 million, bringing its annual compensation to $ 3.7 million and increasing its purchase to $ 5 million. At that time, he became the 7th highest-paid active coach in college football and the highest paid coach outside the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten conferences.

In his first training camp as Longhorns coach, Strong suspended or dismissed a number of players for legal and disciplinary reasons. The player goes to the training camp with a blank white helmet and Strong says they should get the right to have the Longhorn logo on them.
Texas under Strong started 2-4, which included 20-17 defeat nail clippers to # 12 UCLA and 31-26 losing close to # 11 Oklahoma. In 2015, Strong's coaching staff gets the top 10 classes, recruits, competes with rivals, Texas A & amp; M, Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU in recruitment in the state. And during the spring, the trainers turn the offense into a spreading offense, because strong quarterbacks are recruited to be used for this style as it is widely used in high school, Strong noted.
The first strong win against the top 10 team in Texas was at the Red River Showdown in the second year, beating Oklahoma 24-17. In the following AP poll, Texas was ranked for the first time under Strong, at No. 1. 11.
Strong finish the 2016 season with a 5-7 record losing, the third consecutive season he has guided the University of Texas soccer program to a losing season, having inherited a program from Mack Brown that has reached an 8-5 record in 2013 and won a record in 15 of 16 seasons in Texas. The low point of the 2016 campaign came in the final game of the season when Longhorns scored a 21-10 lead in a 24-21 overtime defeat to a Kansas team that won just one game all season before.
On 26 November 2016, Strong was fired from his position as head coach.
South Florida
On December 11, 2016, Strong was named the fourth head coach of the University of South Florida.
